Song of Week: “Savior” - the Blackouts
Wow, it’s totally sad when a band that created truly fantastic music just disappears off the face of the earth, and their music goes with them. Of course it happens all the time, and apparently it happened with the Blackouts.
I used to see the Blackouts in San Francisco in the late ’90s, and played with them a few times with my band MOSS. I have their CD (self-titled), and more and more over the years I find myself thinking these songs are some of my favorite songs of all time. Really. I’m pretty stingy on my 5-star ratings on my iPod, but I think 3 out of their 6 songs have 5 stars.
They played pure punk rock ‘n roll, with some ‘70’s style T-Rex mixed in with some ‘80’s style Van Halen and some ‘90’s Nirvana. Great sing-along hooks but not corny at all. Heartfelt and heavy enough but fast and fun too.
Today, “Savior” came on on shuffle on the iPod, and I quickly looked to see what it was and make sure it had 5 stars, and to turn the volume up, because the song was just so damn good.
Well, thankfully we have the internet. After quite a bit of searching, I found that these guys still have the domain, although they haven’t been a band for 6 years. best of all, you can download 8 of their songs, including the fabulous “Savior”, for FREE: http://www.theblackouts.com/
